A man who allegedly opened fire on a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney's famed Bondi Beach has been charged with 59 offences, including murder and terrorism, New South Wales Police said.

Police have charged the surviving suspect with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder and one count of committing a terrorist act. Mourners are lighting menorah candles in honour of the 15 victims who were killed when two gunmen opened fire Sunday on a Hanukkah celebration. All of the victims have been identified as Jewish. Georgie Smyth is in Sydney with more on the charges. These charges have been a long time coming. Police had been waiting for Naveed Akram to wake up from a coma to be able to have an interview with them before they laid these significant charges. Let's go through a few of them. They include 15 counts of murder, 40 counts of wounding with intent to murder, committing a terrorist act and placing an explosive near a building. We also got an update from the state government here about their plans to push through emergency laws to further restrict gun ownership in the state of New South Wales. Lawmakers will meet early next week to enact those changes off the back of this violence in Bondi. Here's Premier Chris Mintz. The federal government is expected to follow suit soon. There's also some more stories emerging about the heroism that was seen during the terrifying moments of Sunday night. Look at this footage of victim Reuven Morrison throwing bricks at an attacker before he was shot and killed. His daughter told media that he went down fighting to protect the people that he loved. Look at this dash cam video as well of Boris and Sophia Gurman who disarmed a gunman before they too were killed. There's also some remarkable stories by lifeguards and what they did to respond to this emergency situation at the park here. They were among the first responders on scene and this is what one lifeguard told me. Once they realised the enormity of the event and there were still active shooters, they grabbed every rescue board they had in the surf club. And the rescue boards are normally used to rescuing people out in the surf. That's what you see, those yellow boards and they paddle out there. They grabbed those to use as makeshift stretchers. Steve also told us that some people had fled into the ocean to escape the gunfire and lifeguards also went in to save them.
