Authorities confirmed the suspects traveled to Mindanao, a region with known ISIS-linked groups, and returned to Sydney weeks before the shooting. The incident is being treated as terrorism, and investigators are examining if the Philippines trip played a role in the planning.

The two alleged gunmen behind Sunday's deadly attack on a Hanukkah event in Sydney had traveled to the Philippines weeks before the assault, and appeared to be inspired by Islamic State. That was according to Australian police on Tuesday. The attack left 15 people dead, with one of the shooters also killed. Authorities say the incident is being investigated as an act of terrorism targeting the Jewish community. Here's Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. It would appear that there is evidence that this was inspired by a terrorist organization, by ISIS. Now some of the evidence, which is being procured, including the presence of Islamic State flags in the vehicle that has been seized, are a part of that. Political perversion of Islam is absolutely a problem. It is something that has been identified globally as a problem as well. ISIS is created by an evil ideology that has been called out, not just by the Australian government, but globally as well. Police identified the alleged gunman as 50-year-old Indian national Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old Australian national son Naveed Akram. Sajid was killed by police during the attack, while Naveed remains in critical condition. Australian authorities confirmed both men traveled to the Philippines last month. Immigration records show they flew from Sydney to Manila on November 1st, then traveled onward to Davao in Mindanao, a region where ISIS-linked groups have operated. They returned to Sydney on November 28th, just weeks before the shooting. The Armed Forces of the Philippines says it is validating the reports and coordinating with agencies on possible terrorist ties. Islamic State influence in the Philippines has waned since the 2017 Marawi siege, but remnants of extremist networks remain active in the south. Sunday's attack was Australia's worst mass shooting in nearly 30 years, and investigators are probing whether the trip to the Philippines played a role in the planning.
