A new study lists the weak spots in Europe's power grid as geopolitical challenges and climate change are testing the continent's infrastructure "as never before."

Albania experiences the highest number of power blackouts in Europe, averaging around 40 outages and 65 hours without electricity per person each year. North Macedonia, Georgia, and Armenia also face frequent and lengthy outages, while Italy and Norway, despite their advanced infrastructure, still encounter occasional disruptions—often due to extreme weather.

In contrast, Switzerland has the most reliable electricity supply, with nearly zero outages annually. Other countries with strong records for power reliability include Germany, France, the UK, and Luxembourg, each recording less than 20 minutes of downtime per person per year.

Which European countries are at most risk of blackouts?

What's the worst place in Europe to start a frozen food business? Albania has ranked as the most blackout affected country in Europe. On average, the country suffers around 40 outages a year. That's about 65 hours without power per person, far more than anywhere else on the continent. Next door, neighbouring North Macedonia comes in second with around 13 blackouts a year and more than six hours of downtime. Georgia and Armenia also face frequent long-lasting outages, adding up to between six and seven hours a year with multiple interruptions per customer. Italy, the EU's third largest economy, ranks 13 out of 38 countries with almost two outages per year. And maybe even more surprisingly, Norway lands at number 15. Despite having one of the most reliable power grids in the world, the country can be hit by extreme weather events, from heavy snowstorms to falling trees. At the other end of the spectrum, Switzerland takes the crown for the most reliable electricity supply, with almost zero power outages a year. Germany, France, the UK and Luxembourg also rank among the best, with less than 20 minutes of annual downtime per person.
