The Portuguese government has repeatedly and insistently condemned the restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid, the situation of starvation, the forced displacement of populations in the Gaza Strip and, equally, the manifestly disproportionate response that provokes so many civil victims and the destruction of infrastructures such as schools and hospitals or even religious institutions, whether of the Muslim majority or the Christian minority. The move came just one day before world leaders convened in New York to partake in the annual UN General Assembly high-level week. And though it's seen as largely symbolic, it signals a historic shift in European foreign policy. Israel is now among more than 150 other countries that also recognize a Palestinian state.
