These calls were made in a social media post, despite established Department of Justice safeguards intended to prevent political influence over prosecutions.

The situation coincides with the recent departure of Eric Siebert, the top federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia, an office that would handle any potential case against Tish James. While Trump claims Siebert was fired due to his support from Democratic senators, others suggest his removal was linked to his reluctance to pursue charges against James. An acting U.S. attorney has now taken over the role.

You know, the remarkable thing from the weekend is we saw a post from President Trump publicly pushing Attorney General Pam Bondi to prosecute some of his political opponents, and that's despite safeguards within the Department of Justice against this exact type of thing. What evidence is he citing? What type of reaction are you seeing? Oh, it wasn't subtle. It was a truth social post in which the president urged the U.S. Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to move forward with cases against high-profile Trump political opponents, not just the New York Attorney General, Tish James, who is accused of mortgage fraud in Virginia, an accusation she denies, but also James Comey, the former FBI director, Adam Schiff, the California senator, also who denies allegations of mortgage fraud. Putting these provocative requests out in the public sphere is a big change from the norms of an independent U.S. Department of Justice that does not yield to political requests or political favors. The U.S. Department of Justice has responded in kind here because the U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia has been moved out. That would be the office arrow that would handle any case against Tish James. And this does all come amid the departure of Eric Siebert, the top federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia. Break down exactly what happened there. Eric Siebert, longtime career prosecutor, took the job in January at the start of the administration. He was the president's nominee to get Senate confirmation to be in charge of this enormously powerful U.S. Attorney's Office. Eastern District of Virginia has one of the largest staffs and one of the largest portfolios. He says he resigned on Friday. The president says he fired Siebert, but there are differing reasons. The president says it's because Siebert had the support of two Democratic senators from Virginia. He didn't like that. But there are accusations, Errol, that Siebert was removed because he wouldn't move against Tish James in a prosecution for mortgage fraud. A new U.S. attorney, an acting U.S. attorney, is arriving this morning at the office in Alexandria to man that ship for now. President Trump keeping up that pressure. Scott, thank you.
