Southern China and Hong Kong are bracing for Super Typhoon Ragasa as authorities evacuate hundreds of thousands of people. CBS News' Anna Coren has more details.

Super Typhoon Ragasa is moving toward southern China and Hong Kong, bringing hurricane-force winds of up to 220 kilometers per hour. The storm has already caused fatalities in the northern Philippines and is expected to bring destructive winds, heavy rain, and storm surges to low-lying areas as it nears the region.

Authorities in Guangdong province have evacuated hundreds of thousands of residents from coastal areas due to the severe threat posed by the typhoon. In Hong Kong, a densely populated city, schools and businesses have been closed and flights suspended, causing significant disruption. While Hong Kong regularly experiences typhoons, there is heightened concern about the potential destruction from this particularly powerful storm.

Our attention to Asia now, where cities across southern China are bracing themselves for a super typhoon. You've got authorities evacuating hundreds of thousands of people. There are also major disruptions to flights across the region. CBS News foreign correspondent Anna Korin is watching all this from Hong Kong. Anna, you're sitting effectively in the bullseye of this storm. Good morning to you. How are people in general faring with this massive system? Well, Errol, as you say, Super Typhoon Ragasa is shaping up to be one of the most powerful storms of the year. Currently, it's packing hurricane force winds of up to 220 kilometers an hour. That's 137 miles per hour, equivalent to a Category 4. It is barreling, as you say, towards Hong Kong across the South China Sea after sweeping over the top of the northern Philippines yesterday, claiming several lives. We are expected to feel the full impact of that super typhoon tomorrow morning local time. That is when it will be closest to the city. At this stage, it won't be a direct hit, but it will bring those destructive winds, heavy rains, and that storm surge, posing a huge threat to low-lying areas. Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from coastal areas in Guangdong province in southern China, where authorities say the storm poses a severe threat. Well, here in Hong Kong, this is a densely populated city of 7 and 1⁄2 million people. Schools and businesses have been shut. The airport has suspended flights. This is a major disruption to one of the world's largest financial centers. And Errol, I think it's important to note Hong Kong is used to typhoons every single year, on average about six. But there is real concern about the potential destruction that this super typhoon will bring tomorrow. Well, we want you and everyone you're close to to stay safe.
