The World Food Program stated it could move up to 600 trucks of supplies daily, pending approval to access all border crossings. Aid groups emphasize that rapid facilitation and open crossings are crucial to address severe shortages of food and medicine caused by an Israeli embargo.

The situation in northern Gaza is described as particularly critical, with hundreds of thousands of residents lacking assistance for weeks. UNICEF has highlighted the urgent need for nutrition support, warning that 50,000 children are at risk of acute malnutrition and immediate treatment is necessary to prevent a spike in child deaths.

'We're ready to move,' say aid groups waiting to enter Gaza

Thousands of displaced Palestinians streamed back to shattered cities and homes reduced to rubble in Gaza after the first phase of a ceasefire took effect Friday. And aid groups say they are ready to flood the enclave with desperately needed food and other essentials. We're ready to move, you know, we can move 600 trucks a day tomorrow. Ross Smith is the World Food Program's director of emergencies and says he's just waiting for a green light. So we need all crossings to be open. We need rapid facilitation of movement across these, through these crossings, so this includes the scanning of trucks, the approvals of convoys, etc. This is where we see the real bottleneck at the moment. An Israeli embargo on the enclave made food and medicine scarce for the more than two million residents. But with more than half a million people in famine conditions facing famine in Gaza, it's a real challenge that they get the medical support as well as the food. Smith said the situation in northern Gaza is particularly dire. We really need to access northern Gaza. So we have half a million people that have just displaced south of Gaza City, but still three or four hundred thousand people trapped there, and they haven't been receiving assistance for several weeks now. So we urgently need to access northern Gaza. UNICEF is ready. The aid must flow. The UN children's charity UNICEF called on Friday for opening all crossings for food aid into war-shattered Gaza. We risk seeing a massive spike in child deaths, not only neonatal, but also infants, given their immune systems are more compromised than ever before. UNICEF said nutrition support is the main priority, with 50,000 children at risk of acute malnutrition and in need of immediate treatment.
