Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy reported that over half of recent flight delays were due to these staffing issues, as many federal workers, including air traffic controllers, are required to work without knowing when they will be paid.

Airports in cities such as Dallas, Chicago, and Nashville have experienced significant disruptions, with Nashville International Airport reporting more than 200 delayed flights and over 40,000 affected passengers. The Federal Aviation Administration attributed these delays to unexpected staff callouts, which at times resulted in ground stops and halted arrivals.

Now they're required to keep working during the shutdown, but like all federal workers, they don't know when they will get their next paycheck. And speaking on Fox News today, the secretary said 53% of flight delays over the last few days have been because of staffing issues. According to flight tracker, flight aware there were more than 3200 flight delays today in the US. And more than 50 cancellations. CBS News correspondent Nicole Valdez joins us now from Nashville International Airport. Nicole, can you talk to us about what we can expect from airports across the country? As this shutdown continues, a lot of uncertainty for people. At Nancy, absolutely, and you're thinking about several busy airports all across the country, everywhere from Dallas, Fort Worth, Chicago's O'Hare, even here in Nashville just yesterday. I mean, my goodness, it was quite a challenging day for so many people who were trying to fly in and out of the city on a day where we had some major events happening here. In Music City we were dealing with what the FAA called a limited staffing issue at the air traffic control tower. What that meant was that unfortunately the airport here had to start to slow down the amount of flights they were having come in and out because they didn't have enough of those air traffic controllers and that lasted for several hours looking back now they were able to give us some numbers. We're talking more than 200 flights that were delayed as a result and more than 40,000 passengers that felt the impact of again these staffing shortages the FAA attributes to what they call unexpected callouts. They even had to at one point have a ground stop issued here in Nashville as a result so no arriving flights were able to land here. Now you gotta think about all the people right who were trying to get to where they were going, whether that was going somewhere or coming back home. That sort of felt the the headache, right? And one woman with a family of six and she had to rebook her flight four separate times to try to make it. Over to California.
