The National Hurricane Center is keeping a close eye on a broad area of low pressure now spinning in the northern Gulf. The chance of developing into a tropical depression is low, but not out of the question given the very warm Gulf water.

A broad area of rotation has been identified in the Gulf of Mexico, currently carrying a 10% chance of developing into a tropical system. Meteorologists note that, while the low pressure and troughiness present could bring heavy rainfall, the system is also facing some wind shear that may inhibit its development.

Forecast models, particularly the European model, suggest a possibility that the disturbance could become a tropical depression as it moves west over warm waters. Regardless of whether it develops further, the primary concern for the region is the risk of flooding due to anticipated heavy downpours over the next several days.

X marks the spot of where you have that broad rotation. Still only 10% chance as this moves across the Gulf here. But it's not just low pressure that we have to worry about there. It's just troughiness, too. And all of that combined is going to give us the threat of very heavy downpours as we head over the next couple of days. As this moves west, the question is, can this consolidate into a well-defined tropical low? Water temperatures are warm enough. There's going to be perhaps a little bit of shear that it's fighting. You can see we do have some shear in the environment. As it goes west, though, the euro wants this to turn into a depression. Oh, jumping up there with this last run. Very interesting that the euro is so hot on this turning into a tropical depression. Regardless, we are going to see the threat of flooding as we head over the next several days with these heavier downpours.
