President Trump and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell had a disagreement almost immediately as the two men set foot in the Fed's headquarters in Washington to survey an extensive renovation project on two of the reserve's buildings. Nancy Cordes has more.

President Trump made a rare visit to the Federal Reserve headquarters, marking the first such visit by a U.S. president in nearly two decades. During the tour, Trump and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell openly disagreed about the escalating costs of the building's renovation, with Trump claiming the price had risen to $3.1 billion, a figure Powell said he was unaware of.

The visit took place as Democrats argued it was intended to distract from renewed attention on the Jeffrey Epstein case, following reports that Trump’s name appears in related files. House Speaker Mike Johnson and other leaders have called for full accountability in the Epstein investigation, while Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's associate, recently met with prosecutors as part of ongoing inquiries.

Today, the president attempted to shift the focus to the Federal Reserve, whose chairman he has threatened to fire for failing to lower interest rates. The president has also been critical of Chairman Jerome Powell's $2.5 billion renovation of Fed headquarters, and the former real estate developer decided to check them out. Nancy Cordes is at the White House tonight. Nancy? Maurice, this was the first time in nearly 20 years that a U.S. president has paid a visit to the Federal Reserve. And after slamming Powell endlessly from afar, Trump shared his views in person today, which was just as uncomfortable as one would imagine. A lot of very expensive work, there's no question about it. Standing side-by-side in hard hats, the president and the Fed chair clashed right away over the cost of the renovations Trump had come to see. It looks like it's about $3.1 billion, went up a little bit, or a lot, so the 2.7 is now 3.1. I'm not aware of that. Yeah, it just came out. Democrats argued the entire tour was designed to distract from the saga surrounding the late convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein. We had a very productive day today. In Tallahassee, Florida today, Epstein's chief accomplice, 63-year-old Ghislaine Maxwell, met with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking, and according to prosecutors, she lied repeatedly about her crimes. Her lawyer claimed she did not lie today. And Ms. Maxwell answered every single question. She never stopped, she never invoked a privilege. She never declined to answer. She answered all the questions truthfully, honestly, and to the best of her ability. Democrats are pushing for more details after the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump was told back in May that his name appears in the Epstein case files. The fact that he was informed, and the decision was made to refuse to release the files, smacks of a cover-up. Just last week, Trump denied his name was in the files. And he made this unsubstantiated claim. You know, these files were made up by Comey, they were made up by Obama. Even Republican leaders disagree with that. This is not a hoax, in other words. Oh, it's not a hoax, of course not. In a new interview with CBS News, House Speaker Mike Johnson called for more accountability. We want everybody who is involved in any way with the Epstein evils, let's call it what it was, to be brought to justice as quickly as possible. We want the full weight of the law on their heads. Nancy, what does the government want to get, or do they hope to get out of talking to Ghislaine Maxwell? John, it's unclear what they can get, because Maxwell pleaded not guilty the first time around, and she's still appealing her conviction. So, she may not have any incentive to tell DOJ anything more than she originally told investigators. But at the very least, DOJ can say it is doing something on an issue that the president's base clearly cares a lot about.
