Israel has recalled its negotiating team from Gaza for further consultations following a response from Hamas regarding ongoing ceasefire and hostage release negotiations. The Israeli prime minister's office acknowledged the efforts of mediators from Qatar and Egypt, as well as U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, in seeking a breakthrough in the talks.

Despite the team's return, sources familiar with the negotiations indicated that this move does not necessarily signal a crisis. Hamas has submitted a new ceasefire proposal, reportedly including a 60-day truce and the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. However, significant gaps remain, particularly concerning the potential withdrawal of Israeli forces, and a final agreement has not yet been reached.

Israel brings back Gaza negotiating team for ceasefire 'consultations'

We've got some breaking news out of the Middle East this morning. There appears to be movement between Israel and Gaza over a possible ceasefire and hostage release agreement. For more on this, I'm joined by CBS News foreign correspondent, Rami Nissencio, from our London bureau. Rami, tell us about this breaking news. Yeah, Vlad, there is some movement in these talks that is enough for the office of Israel's prime minister to issue a statement. And we have that. Let's throw it up on the screen for you here. It says that in light of the response that Hamas gave this morning, it was decided to return the negotiating team for further consultations in Israel. It goes on to say that we appreciate the efforts of mediators, Qatar and Egypt, and the efforts of envoy Witkoff, Steve Witkoff, here to bring about a breakthrough in these talks. So Israel basically says it is bringing back its negotiators. Now, on the face of it, it might sound like that is a setback in these talks. But according to Reuters, who is citing two sources familiar with these talks in Qatar, that Israel's decision does not actually necessarily indicate that there is a crisis. In fact, a senior Hamas source said that there was still a chance of reaching some kind of agreement, but that it would take what it says is a few days. And that source said that it calls Israeli stalling as a reason for it—for this to be slowing down. But Hamas today also said it sent its latest proposal for a ceasefire to Israel. And an official there said, reportedly, that this is workable. From what we understand, from our reporting previously, this is expected to include a 60-day ceasefire. During that time, Hamas would release 10 living hostages and the bodies of 18 others. That would be in exchange for, as in the past, Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention. What we're also seeing now, though, is that Israel's local news stations, Channel 12, said that a deal wasn't within reach, gaps are still there. That includes where the Israeli military might withdraw if there were a truce there. But I'll say, Vlad, that what would really be telling right now—remember, Steve Whitkoff is nearby. He's in Europe. He's in Italy, Trump's special envoy to the Mideast. If we saw some movement from Whitkoff himself to be dispatched to Israel, then there could be some more movement, some kind of signal that a deal could be close at hand.
