European Union Chief Ursula von der Leyen has outlined her vision for the future of the bloc in her state of the union address in Strasbourg. The Commssion President tackled a host of issues in her speech, including defense, trade, and relations with Israel.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen addressed the European Parliament, emphasizing the need for the European Union to assert greater independence in defence, technology, and energy. She highlighted the negative impact of recent trade tensions with the United States and called for the EU to reduce its dependencies.

Von der Leyen also announced the suspension of EU funding for Israel and proposed sanctions against certain Israeli officials and settlers, citing humanitarian concerns. Her proposals now require approval from the 27 EU member states, and she called for increased unity among European institutions and governments to address these challenges.

Von der Leyen calls for EU to assert independence

The President of the European Commission steps in front of the European Parliament with a fighting spirit. Her message? Europe is weak and needs to change. This must be Europe's independence moment. I believe this is our Union's mission. To be able to take care of our own defence and security. To take control over the technologies and energies that will fuel our own economies. Europeans know how painful dependency can be, especially after being forced into a trade deal with Washington. US tariffs hit almost all EU goods, while American exports stay exempt. Von der Leyen has defended the pact as the best deal anyone managed to strike with Donald Trump. Opposition lawmakers say the humiliation of this summer has at least sparked new resolve. I think it was a painful summer where we were being humiliated as Europe and we now need leadership from this Commission. Another key moment, Von der Leyen announced an end to EU funding for Israel and to her Commission's work with its government. People killed while begging for food. Mothers holding lifeless babies. Unmade famine can never be a weapon of war. For the sake of the children, for the sake of humanity, this must stop. She's also proposing sanctions against extremist ministers and violent settlers. And a partial suspension of the EU-Israel association agreement on matters of trade. And as a human being, we have to act and we have to stop what is happening there. Von der Leyen's plan now goes to the 27 member states, where unity is far from certain. But she's calling for exactly that, a new sense of unity. Unity between member states. Unity between European institutions. Unity between the pro-European democratic forces of this house. Her call for a new kind of Europe drew praise from centrists. But whether she can deliver, it will be tested in the year ahead.
