French Prime Minister François Bayrou has been ousted from office after lawmakers overwhelmingly passed a no-confidence vote against him. Bayrou, who served for nine months, had proposed significant public spending cuts totaling approximately $51 billion to address France's debt crisis, but these measures faced strong opposition from across the political spectrum.

The defeat was anticipated, as concerns grew over the potential impact of the cuts on public services, particularly healthcare. With Bayrou's removal, President Emmanuel Macron must now decide whether to call a snap election or appoint a new prime minister, as France continues to grapple with its ongoing debt challenges.

Well France's Prime Minister has been ousted from the government in a confidence vote. Lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to remove François Beyrou after just nine months in office. CBS News correspondent Chanel Call follows this story from CBS Broadcast Center. So what spurred this vote and why did lawmakers so strongly remove him? I've been studying this morning that France has a major debt problem on its hand. That's right that's really the focus of this. This is a huge political crisis for France, Reid, but that vote today is not really a huge surprise. I'll tell you why. For weeks now Prime Minister François Beyrou, who by the way is pretty centrist, was proposing that France should essentially slash public spending to repair its debts. You talked about that debt problem there. We're talking about some pretty drastic cuts that he was proposing to the tune of about 51 billion dollars, Reid, and the goal there was to resolve the country's financial problems. But this idea proved to be pretty unpopular. There was a lot of opposition to this, notably Reid, from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, and frankly his defeat today seemed inevitable. He actually called the non-confidence vote himself today in Parliament. In fact our partners at the BBC had reported that his speech at the National Assembly, quote, felt like a funeral procession for his minority So that vote came in 364 to 194 against him. That now means he's been formally ousted from government. It also now means, Reid, that there's going to be some serious turmoil for the country right now. President Emmanuel Macron, he has a couple of options here on the table. So he can call for a snap election, or he can pick a fifth Prime Minister, and get this, less than two years. There's been so much turnover. And we should mention the nation's debt problem, that is still a really big problem. Yeah, and it's a roll of the dice if Macron goes either way, right? So let's talk about the cuts there that were being proposed, those steep cuts. A lot of people are saying it was because the country has very generous health care offerings for the people who live there, and that some of those cuts would have eroded that. Is that really what drove the public sentiment and that no-confidence vote? I mean, look, I think there was a lot of concern that that may have been a reality. And I think lawmakers were hesitant to vote to empower this kind of proposal, because they are looking at their constituents coming up to the next election. So because there were so many concerns around the impact this proposal may have, people did want to turn away from it. But the problem is still that the nation's debt crisis is still a crisis, and they're gonna have to find a way to move forward some way or another. Chanel Call, always great to see you, my friend.
