Brisbane is hosting the Virtus World Athletics Championships, an international event for athletes with intellectual impairments. More than 300 competitors from 31 countries are participating, including first-time entrants from the Cook Islands. The opening ceremony took place at Roma Street parklands, launching a week-long series of competitions across the city. 

The event provides athletes with opportunities to compete internationally and helps them prepare for future sporting pathways. For Brisbane, the championships also serve as a valuable trial for venues, logistics, and accessibility ahead of the 2032 Paralympic Games. Athletes like Patrick Ram and Sammy are using the event to pursue personal bests and build confidence, while former track star Drew Simmons, now a commentator, is supporting the next generation.

It's the international body for athletes with intellectual impairments. Sport is an opportunity where they can prevail and do well. Today is the first day Brisbane hosts the Virtus World Athletics Championships. Having events like this gives them an opportunity to compete, live overseas, eat different food, all sorts of things acclimatise to what they need to and that prepares them for sporting pathways leading into international events. More than 300 competitors from 31 countries are chasing medals, including three first-timers from the Cook Islands. These guys are the trailblazers and we would love to bring a lot more of our IE students going forward. The opening ceremony lit up Roma Street parklands on Thursday, marking the start of a week-long showcase across the River City. And while it's a major moment for the athletes, it's also helping Brisbane shine ahead of the 2032 Paralympic Games, giving organisers a chance to test venues, logistics and accessibility on the world stage. We've tried to really get around all of Brisbane to show what it's got to offer. Patrick Ram, who has a chromosome abnormality, made his debut today. So we just ran the 100 metres when I've been working at Griffith at home with my case. He says the sport has given him confidence and lifelong friendships. I think I've been good. That was my first time. I was really nervous because all my family here. While 22-year-old Sammy is chasing personal best and Paralympic dreams. Everybody's striving to do PBs, win medals and stuff like that. It's such a great feeling and it's really good for the sport and hope a lot of people can have more eyes onto the sport in the future. And for Victorian Drew Simmons, a former track star diagnosed with autism, sport has opened new doors. Just gave me the confidence for myself and all the support around me has just given me so much confidence. Now a commentator, Drew's cheering on the next generation.
