Utah Transit Authority to expand Trax Green Line ahead of Redwest, Benson Boone events

The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) is expanding its Trax Green Line service in Salt Lake City to support an influx of visitors attending several major events, including a university football game, the Red West Festival, and a concert. Authorities expect nearly 120,000 people in the downtown area, with the Red West Country Music Festival alone drawing attendees from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Canada, and the Netherlands.

City officials are working to optimize traffic signals and manage parking challenges in surrounding neighborhoods. Local partners and residents have been praised for their cooperation, and the community is encouraged to remain patient and courteous as traffic increases. The expanded transit service and coordinated efforts are seen as preparation for even larger events in the future, such as the Olympics.

I'm Mark Blain on North Temple in downtown Salt Lake City near the Utah State Fair Park. And this weekend, UTA will expand its TRAX Green Line service here, with more than 100,000 people expected to visit the area. We have three major events that are happening, the U of U football game, the Red West Festival, and then the Benson Boone concert that are all happening on Saturday night. So you're going to have almost 120,000 people that are flocking towards downtown Salt Lake, and that requires us to be on our toes as well. We have to make sure that the signal timing is exactly right, that we're giving as much green light time to those major routes in and out of the events. While Utah will have its hands full at the three-day Red West Country Music Festival that got underway Friday, they're looking at 40,000 music lovers converging at State Fair Park to take in the music and the festival vibe. We have attendees here literally from all 50 states and Puerto Rico. We've literally brought in people from Canada, there are people from, a bunch of tickets went to a family in the Netherlands. So it's pretty wild to see how many people are coming to Salt Lake City for this. One day, one surrounding neighborhoods tell the story, parking is an issue, with festival goers' vehicles lining the streets, but Jensen says so far they haven't heard too many complaints from people living in the area. We're grateful for all of our partners here in the city who have helped us find solutions for that, and we're grateful for the neighbors for being so accommodating and patient for us. As we continue to grow what is live events and live music here in Salt Lake City, quite frankly in preparation for a slightly bigger event that we're all going to have here in a few years with the Olympics. As for the now, with so many people in town, UDOT asked that people be patient around the downtown area this weekend. If you're stuck in traffic, if you're heading to one of these concerts or the U of U football game, they're fun events, everybody wants to have a good time, try to be kind to the other people out there, even though it's frustrating being stuck in traffic, get to where you're going safely and try to help others get there as well.
