Members of the Utah National Guard have received an email asking if they would volunteer to take part in an operation to assist the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The Utah National Guard is seeking volunteers to assist in administrative and clerical roles supporting federal immigration enforcement, following requests from the federal government. According to Lieutenant Colonel Chris Krober, these roles will include tasks such as processing paperwork, taking fingerprints, and transporting individuals to ICE facilities, but will not involve making arrests or direct enforcement actions.

Governor Spencer Cox and National Guard officials have stressed that the Guard's involvement will be limited to non-enforcement activities, aiming to free up ICE agents for field duties. However, some community leaders, including Brandy Farmer of Centro Civico Mexicano, have expressed concerns that the presence of the National Guard may increase fear and anxiety within the Hispanic community, despite assurances about the limited scope of their role.

Over the past several months, we've followed closely as the Trump administration's immigration enforcement efforts continue to ramp up. Several Utah Sheriff's Offices have entered agreements with ICE. Wasatch County became the latest to do so earlier this month. The federal agency has also offered $50,000 signing bonuses to recruit away local law enforcement officers. And now, they're asking Utah for even more support. As a dual authority state, the federal government does have the opportunity to call up the National Guard. The president does have that authority. I'm Jeremy Toms outside Utah's National Guard headquarters where we're learning more about their efforts to assist ICE in federal immigration enforcement operations. Lieutenant Colonel Chris Krober, spokesperson for the Utah National Guard, confirmed to me they are seeking volunteers to do administrative and clerical work. Governor Spencer Cox spoke in a press conference last week about their potential role. Our National Guard will not be putting hands on people, will not be arresting people. That is not the role of the National Guard and we would not allow that to happen. Krober says the work would be federally funded and could involve processing paperwork, taking fingerprints, and doing transports to ICE facilities, among other tasks. That takes ICE away from doing their administrative work so they have more time on the ground. Brandy Farmer is the president of Centro Civico Mexicano, which she says is the oldest non-profit Hispanic organization in the state. Even though we tell them that law enforcement is not ICE, the Hispanic community is already afraid. She says this new role for the National Guard will only further that fear. Our community is not going to believe that that's all they're doing. Krober tells me it would be a small percentage of their state force, which totals 7,000 people, and the operation would begin around September 15th. But he wouldn't specify how many, voicing concern for the safety of those volunteers. Similarly worried for her community members and loved ones, Farmer is left hoping these men and women won't take up the national request. That's what America is supposed to be.
