Erik and Lyle Menendez, who have been imprisoned for over three decades for the murder of their parents, were denied parole by two separate boards. The parole board acknowledged Lyle Menendez's remorse and model behavior in prison but cited rule violations, including possession of a cell phone, as reasons for continued incarceration. 

The brothers can seek release through a habeas corpus petition or by requesting clemency from California's governor. They will be eligible for parole again in three years. Family members advocating for their release expressed disappointment but remain hopeful.

Well, tonight, Eric and Lyle Menendez are behind bars. That's after two separate parole boards denied their pleas for a release. CBS's Elise Preston in Los Angeles has the details. Jerrica, Eric and Lyle Menendez will both be eligible for parole again in three years. There are still two legal avenues they could pursue to get out of prison. There is what is known as a habeas corpus petition, which could review any new evidence in the case, or California's governor could also grant clemency. During Friday's hearing, Lyle Menendez said he suffered repeated physical and sexual abuse at the hands of his father, Jose, and for the first time, he said he was abused by his mother, Kitty. During the proceedings, the parole board stated it believes Menendez was genuinely remorseful for the 1989 murders at the family's Beverly Hills mansion and also called Menendez a model prisoner in many ways. But the board said he violated many prison rules, including having a cell phone, ultimately deciding Menendez could still pose a risk to the public and would benefit from spending more time incarcerated. Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hockman stands by the parole board's rulings. So they now each have three years to get their act straight, to come clean with all their lies.
