At least five people are dead and dozens are injured after a tour bus traveling from Niagara Falls flipped over on the New York State Thruway near Pembroke, New York.

A tour bus carrying more than 50 passengers overturned on the New York State Thruway near Pembroke, resulting in at least five deaths and dozens of injuries. The bus, traveling from Niagara Falls to New York City, lost control, hit a median, and rolled into a ditch. 

Authorities report that the driver was distracted at the time of the crash, but have ruled out mechanical failure and impairment. Passengers ranged in age from 1 to 74 and included individuals of Indian, Chinese, and Philippine backgrounds. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating, and no charges have been filed.

Lisa Rosner has been tracking the details and she joins us this morning with more. Lisa, good morning. Good morning. A National Transportation Safety Board GO team will be on the scene today to start their investigation. The crash shut down the highway for several hours and this morning police are saying the driver of the bus was distracted at the time of the crash. Our thoughts, prayers, and hearts go out to those involved, their friends, and their family. More than 50 passengers were on board the bus as it headed east along the highway. The bus lost control, hit a median, then overcorrected and ended up on its side in a ditch. The bus did roll, there were multiple ejections, there were multiple people trapped, and there were multiple fatalities. Police say the people on the bus ranged in age from 1 to 74 years old. Most of the people speaking on the tour bus would be Indian, Chinese, and Philippine. So we have all that, we have translators coming in. Police say no other vehicles were involved in the accident. There's a lot of rescues, we still have entrapments, we still have people, we don't know their whereabouts. Police say multiple people were trapped under the bus while several others were trapped inside. Six passengers were flown by helicopters to nearby hospitals, some with severe injuries. We have some folks that have some head injuries, we have some folks that have some extremity fractures, two patients are in the operating room right now. Police have ruled out a mechanical failure or driver impairment. They're investigating what caused the driver to become distracted. The driver is alive and well, we're working with him. We believe we have a good idea of what happened, why the bus lost control. So far, no charges have been filed. The company that operates the bus has a satisfactory safety rating and no record of any accidents over the past two years. Authorities are asking anyone who may have dash cam video or witnessed the crash to contact the New York State Police. Michelle? Lisa, thank you.
