Ukraine reported a strike on an American-owned factory, while Russia claimed a nuclear facility in its Kursk region was hit, though without casualties or radiation leaks. The day also saw a prisoner exchange between the two countries, including the release of the former mayor of Kherson. Despite calls for dialogue, Russia indicated no willingness for talks with Ukraine.

In Ukraine, a nation at war celebrated its Independence Day, 34 years after breaking away from the Soviet Union. Here in Rome, Pope Leo called for prayers and peace against the backdrop of Russia's latest wave of attacks. Bells ring out over Kiev, as Ukraine marked its independence from the Soviet Union 34 years ago. Threatened again by Moscow today. Mr. President. Canada's Prime Minister, Mark Carney, in his first visit as leader to Ukraine, pledged over a billion Canadian dollars in new military aid. At a time when your independence, your sovereignty, and your freedoms still hang in the balance. Still hang in the balance. Russia has launched one of its most intense barrages in months. Ukraine says several Russian cruise missiles slammed into an American-owned factory that made coffee machines. 15 people were reported injured. But Ukraine keeps fighting back. Moscow claims a nuclear facility in Russia's Kursk region was hit, though they reported no wounded or radiation leak. And while the country marked its fragile independence, for dozens of Ukrainian POWs, it was a very real day of freedom, as both countries carried out a prisoner swap. Among those exchanged, the former mayor of Kherson. A lot of prisoners commit suicide, he said. They're traumatized. I don't want to talk about it on this holiday. A holiday strained amid a grim backdrop marked by Pope Leo at the Vatican. Today, we join our Ukrainian brothers and sisters, he said, asking the Lord to grant peace to their tormented country. Pope Leo also urged dialogue in a letter to Zelensky. However, Russia confirmed that Putin has no interest in meeting with Zelensky, Jericho, leaving Ukraine and its allies even more convinced that Russia has no interest in peace or dialogue.
