Utah is marking the 150th anniversary of Catholic education, with schools in the Diocese of Salt Lake holding special masses and activities throughout the year. The milestone highlights the legacy of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, who established the first Catholic school, St. Mary's Academy, in Salt Lake City.

Educators and students at Curran St. Anne Catholic School are participating in the celebrations, emphasizing the role of Catholic schools in fostering community, values, and academic growth. The anniversary year will also include recognition of staff, volunteers, and families who have contributed to the schools' ongoing impact.

Today marks a milestone for education in the Beehive State. It's the 150th anniversary of Catholic education in Utah. I'm FOX 13's Tina Giuliano. Schools in the Diocese of Salt Lake have a special mass today and activities throughout the year. I went to Curran St. Anne Catholic School where I got to see the classroom in action. Walter Archer knows exactly what's next to learn in his kindergarten class. One, two and red and now right now we're learning blue. But he's most excited for a certain topic. Do the counting. I really like counting. Yes, he spent the morning with the little balls here counting. Sister Patrice McGee is at the helm of Walter's classroom at Curran St. Anne's Catholic School. It energizes me and I hope I energize the children. I'm thrilled when they get the aha moment and they know how to read. A moment she's been able to experience for many years. 50 plus. She's a part of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, the sisters that founded the first Catholic school in Salt Lake City. Our sisters came here 150 years ago, so we were the first group of sisters to come to Utah and we began an academy, St. Mary's Academy. So this school year they're celebrating 150 years of Catholic education through mass, sharing photos and different activities with the community. I'm proud of our sisters, proud of the education that we've been able to give to young people, creating a community generation after generation. Principal Dominique Aragon says we are building a society where we need kindness and good people in this world and the value systems and the morals. And that's kind of what Catholic school does. And for Walter, he'll continue counting and crack open a book because I really like seeing the pictures. I really like how they work. It makes me happy. One of the things they'll be doing this year is recognize staff, volunteers and family members who have made an impact on their schools for now reporting in studio. Tina Giuliano, Fox 13 News, Utah.
