But two years later, on Labor Day 1930... That's Kalima Watson, the creator behind Just Kalima. His great-grandfather was Sir Robert de Stafford. He makes videos about genealogy and family history for younger generations online. I'm just trying to get people to see genealogy and family history the same way that I do. People online will send him their family name or sometimes he'll pick a follower at random and make a video about their ancestry. Watson says he finds information through sites like Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org. It's fascinating. After moving from Hawaii to Utah in 2017, he decided to get a tattoo that represented his Hawaiian culture to feel close to home. But before getting it, he started digging into his ancestry. I started to learn about different names that I recognize in Hawaiian history, people who did incredible things, people who were voyagers, they were warriors, they were leaders. And the more I learned for them, the closer I felt to them. That search is what eventually sparked the idea for the videos he makes today. Since May, his channel has grown to nearly 200,000 followers. One of those followers is Mark Heskay. He says Watson digged up information about his family's history dating back to the 1700s. I had no idea who Matthew Pinnell was, that I was related to him. He managed a lighthouse that was under a lot of scrutiny in a way because the previous keepers of the lighthouse had not been doing their job properly and there was a big accident and Matthew Pinnell took over the lighthouse to manage it for years and years. I had no idea that was part of my family's history. It gives you a feeling of pride knowing that you have ancestors that did something meaningful. At the end of the day, Watson says he hopes his videos remind people that your roots aren't just where you came from, they're what you carry now.
