The United Nations Food Agency has reported encouraging progress in addressing severe hunger in Sudan, noting that the risk of famine has been declassified in nine out of ten previously affected areas. Despite these improvements, ongoing conflict has left two regions cut off from aid, and the World Food Programme (WFP) continues to face significant challenges in reaching all those in need.

The WFP is currently assisting hundreds of thousands of displaced people in Darfur and other northern states, but limited access and resources remain major obstacles. Over 21 million Sudanese are facing acute hunger, and the agency warns that without increased funding and access, it may not be able to maintain current assistance levels in the coming months.

The United Nations Food Agency says its ongoing efforts to fight severe hunger in Sudan are beginning to show some encouraging results. It says the risk of famine has been declassified in nine of the ten areas where it was confirmed last year. But with ongoing fighting in some regions, it warns that two areas remain cut off from aid. So WFP is on the ground in Darfur and there are hundreds of thousands of people that have fled from al-Fasha and elsewhere over recent weeks. And WFP is responding to those people in the areas where they are arriving. For example, there are more than half a million people that have arrived to Tawila. WFP is assisting people there. Also in other towns around North Darfur and northern states as well. So the response needs to be agile. It needs to be flexible. We need to be able to reroute our convoys and assistants according to a very dynamic and insecure situation on the ground. But despite these promising signs, the WFP says Sudan remains one of the world's largest hunger crises, with famine confirmed in two parts of the country. You have two main challenges, particularly in those areas that are the most affected by the conflict. That's in the Darfur states and in the Kordofan states in the south. One problem is access and that is affecting particular towns such as the city of al-Fasha and Kadugli. And the other problem is resources, where we're reaching four to five million people each month, but most of those people are receiving reduced rations. And come January, we simply won't have the resources in the pipeline in order to be able to continue providing that level of assistance. The agency says more than 21 million Sudanese are facing acute hunger. With increased funding and access, it says it could help more people each month and support conditions for them to return home.
