Authorities are closely reviewing Lakhanwal's immigration history and the vetting process, as he reportedly entered the U.S. after working with CIA-backed forces in Afghanistan. The incident has prompted a halt to new Afghan immigration applications while the process undergoes further review.

The two National Guard members shot while on patrol in Washington, D.C. had volunteered to work on the American Thanksgiving so other Guard members could celebrate the holiday. They'll talk about what they're grateful for. This morning, there are two families that will not have that opportunity. Twenty-year-old Sarah Backstrom and 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe remain in hospital in critical condition. The shooter's been charged with assault with the intent to kill. The U.S. attorney for D.C. says that charge could be upgraded. We are praying that they survive and that the highest charge will not have to be murder in the first degree. The Afghan national, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakhanwal, allegedly attacked the pair using a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver after driving cross-country from his home in Washington state. We're working very closely with our federal partners, especially DHS and the FBI to review his immigration history and the vetting process itself. Since 2021 and the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Department of Homeland Security reports roughly 80,000 Afghans have settled in the U.S. Wednesday's shootings prompted the Trump administration to halt new Afghan applications, pending a review of the process. Often our immigration laws are based on emotions and not that of true policy and true vetting. And I think we have to be better at vetting those that want to come into this country. Lakhanwal had previously worked with CIA-backed partner forces in Afghanistan, which may have led to his immigration application under the Biden administration receiving less scrutiny.
