Bolsonaro was convicted of plotting a coup following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election and was detained at the federal police headquarters in Brasília after authorities said he removed his ankle monitor.

Bolsonaro's son Flavio criticized the legal process as predetermined, while Bolsonaro himself denied intent to escape, attributing his actions to side effects from prescribed medication. Prior to his detention, Bolsonaro had spent over 100 days under house arrest in a separate case involving alleged attempts to involve former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Earlier on Tuesday, Brazil's top court formally concluded Bolsonaro's case, ruling that all appeals were exhausted and his guilty verdict had become final. Bolsonaro's lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The former president has been detained at Brazil's federal police headquarters since Saturday, after authorities said he removed his ankle monitor with a soldering iron. In a custody hearing on Sunday, he denied any intent to escape, saying that paranoia and hallucination brought on by medicine prescribed by different doctors had caused him to tamper with the ankle monitor. Before his detention on Saturday, Bolsonaro spent more than 100 days under house arrest in Brasilia, in a separate case over allegations he asked U.S. President Donald Trump to disrupt the prosecution against him.
