The United Nations Secretary General has resisted labeling Israel's military actions in Gaza as genocide, despite the UN Special Rapporteur and a Commission of Inquiry both describing the situation in those terms. The Secretary General stated that such a determination should be made by a court of law, referencing the ongoing but slow-moving case at the International Court of Justice.

He emphasized the UN's efforts to defend Palestinian interests and highlighted the deaths of UN personnel in Gaza, as well as the organization's condemnation of violations of international law. The situation in Gaza is expected to be a major focus at the upcoming UN General Assembly, where recognition of Palestine as a state by several countries is anticipated.

But here at UN headquarters in New York, that's not the position of the UN Secretary General. He says that has to be decided by a court of law. Yes, there's a case at the International Court of Justice, but it's moving very slowly. In fact, another case on possible genocide in Myanmar has now gone on for five years. Earlier at a news conference, I challenged the Secretary General on his position. So won't history judge you harshly if you don't declare what we can all see in front of our eyes? Is this not what genocide looks like, Secretary General? History will remember the fact that we were in the first line to fight for the defense of the interests of the Palestinian people. History will remember the 400 UN members that were killed in Gaza. History will remember all the efforts that we have made to denounce the constant violations of international law and, worst, the level of death and destruction that has no parallel in my time in office. The situation in Gaza will be top of the agenda next week when world leaders gather here in New York for the high-level week of the UN General Assembly. There'll be a meeting on Palestine and the strong likelihood that a number of countries, including two permanent members of the Security Council, the UK and France, will recognize Palestine as a state.
