Israel's military has started what it's called the main step of its ground invasion of Gaza City, where entire neighborhoods have already been reduced to ruins and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been forced to flee. It comes as Israeli leaders have reacted angrily to the U.N. Commission of Inquiry's genocide report, denouncing it as, quote, distorted and false. The report relies entirely on Hamas falsehoods laundered and repeated by others. Investigators found, quote, reasonable grounds that Israel has committed four of the five acts of genocide under the 1948 U.N. Convention. The goal of the Israeli government is abundantly clear. As we continue to witness the destruction of Palestinians in Gaza, the commission finds it is genocide. The four acts Israel is accused of committing since the start of the war with Hamas following the brutal 2023 October 7th attacks include killing members of a group, causing them serious bodily and mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions calculated to destroy the group and preventing births. The report not only cites the pattern of conduct by Israeli forces as evidence of, quote, genocidal intent, but also the statements of Israeli leaders, by alleging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant have all, quote, incited the commission of genocide. And a number of international and Israeli human rights groups and scholars have also accused Israel of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. This while the International Court of Justice is hearing a case that accuses Israeli forces of genocide, a case Israel has called wholly unfounded and based on biased and false claims. Gail.
