The U.S. Secretary of State has visited Qatar a week after Israel attacked a meeting of the Hamas negotiating team in Doha. Marco Rubio met Qatar's Prime Minister and the Emir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Doha for discussions with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and the Prime Minister, following an Israeli attempt to assassinate Hamas negotiators in the Qatari capital. The attack, which resulted in the deaths of several Hamas members and a Qatari security officer, was condemned by Qatar as terrorism and a breach of sovereignty, straining relations with Washington.

During his visit, Rubio discussed enhancing security cooperation and indicated that the US and Qatar were close to signing an enhanced defence agreement. The visit took place shortly after an emergency summit in Doha, where Arab and Muslim countries expressed solidarity with Qatar and called for international action against Israel. Despite US praise for Qatar's mediation efforts, Washington's support for Israel's actions has complicated Qatar's role in seeking an end to the conflict in Gaza.

America's top diplomat arrived in Qatar from meetings with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday. A handshake with Qatar's Prime Minister, smiles with its leader Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, but a cordiality that belies the seriousness of the situation after a momentous week for the Gulf state and wider region. Following Israel's attempt to assassinate Hamas negotiators in Doha on September 9th, Qatar has called the attack by Israel an act of terror and a flagrant violation of its sovereignty and international law. The strikes failed to kill the team, but killed five members of Hamas and a member of Qatar's security forces. The US requested Qatar host Hamas in 2012 and has praised Doha's mediating efforts in conflicts around the world for years. But the attack has strained Doha's relationship with Washington, its most powerful ally more than ever before. Rubio came to Qatar straight from Israel, where standing next to Israel's leader, he apparently endorsed the attack in Doha, but asked Qatar to continue its diplomatic efforts to end the war on Gaza. We are focused on what happens now, what happens next, what role can Qatar play possibly. In reaching an outcome here that leads not just to the end of this hostilities, not just to the release of all of the hostages, both living and deceased, not just the disarmament and elimination of Hamas, but also a better future for the people of Gaza. Qatar's foreign ministry says the Emir and the US Secretary of State discussed enhancing their security cooperation. Rubio said Qatar and the US were on the verge of signing what he described as an enhanced defence cooperation agreement. Qatar plays host to the largest US airbase in the region, one that's supposed, in theory, to offer Qatar security. The US has repeatedly denied accusations it had sufficient time to warn Qatar of Israel's attack. And some suspect it may have turned a blind eye to Israel's attempt to sabotage Qatar's longstanding efforts at mediating an end to the war. It's very difficult to believe that the US is going to come to the defence of Qatar as it seems to be almost ignoring what Israel did, though they condemned it. There would need to be a stronger show of force, I would think. And it's, you know, the US at this moment, I think this is what Rubio is doing. He's just trying to do some damage control. Rubio's visit comes a day after Doha hosted an emergency summit of Arab and Muslim countries. It was a show of solidarity with Qatar and condemnation, demanding Israel be punished and further isolated on the international stage, with renewed demands that its leader be prosecuted by the International Criminal Court. The US Secretary of State's visit to Doha only lasted a couple of hours, an indication perhaps that despite the US's praise of Qatar's attempts to try and mediate between Hamas and Israel, Washington's endorsement of Netanyahu's vow to kill Hamas members wherever they are gives very little chance to Qatar to achieve what it's been trying to do for almost two years, and that's end the war on Gaza.
