During his visit, Rubio will attempt to balance criticism of the Israeli airstrike on Hamas targets in Doha last week, while also pledging the United States overall support. Rubio's trip comes ahead of the expected formal recognition of Palestinian statehood by a number of other U.S. allies, including Canada, the U.K. and France. The CBC's Sasha Pedersik has more from Jerusalem. When Rubio arrived here, his number one job was to put these negotiations back on track. In other words, to head both, to put both sides on the track to come up with a way to end this conflict, to end the war. Israel is looking instead like it is probably ramping up, but he's trying to calm things down. This comes after, as you say, the U.S. complained about Israel's attacks on Qatar and its attempts to assassinate the Hamas negotiating team there. That, of course, was not a productive way of getting the proposals that were on the table to be considered by both sides. But the Americans are basically saying while they are upset with Israel, with what it did and with not giving it enough advance notice so that the U.S. could step in and stop it, they are nonetheless considering Israel its ally and will continue to support it. This has, of course, been very controversial internationally as well. Many countries have criticized Israel as a result of this, but not the U.S., and Rubio says he won't be doing that here. This is what he had to say. What's happened has happened. Obviously, we were not happy about it. The president was not happy about it. Now we need to move forward and figure out what comes next, because at the end of the day, when all is said and done, there is still a group called Hamas, which is an evil group that still has weapons and is terrorizing. There are still 48 hostages that deserve to be released immediately, all at once. And there is still the hard work ahead of once the U.S. is back in power, the U.S. will be back in power. And we're going to continue to fight. We're going to continue to fight. We're going to continue to fight. Now, Qatar has criticized Israel as well, perhaps more than anybody else, for launching this attack on its territory. It's called Israel cowardly and says it violated international law. And in fact, today it is bringing together other Arab leaders for a summit, an emergency summit in Doha. We'll see what comes out of that. They are trying to figure out a response to Israel's moves. There's not a lot of support for what Israel did here either, among those who are trying to get Israel's hostages released, the families and their supporters. We're on the streets of Tel Aviv last night and other cities. They think that the leadership here, especially Netanyahu, is trying to find any way to derail the negotiations because of pressure from right-wing allies who want this war to continue.
