While the European Union has already banned maritime imports of Russian oil and some refined products, several countries, including Hungary and Slovakia, continue to import Russian fossil fuels. Turkey, the third-largest purchaser of Russian oil after China and India, was also included in Trump's ultimatum. The EU aims to phase out Russian oil imports by 2028, but Trump's demand calls for more immediate action. The US has already increased tariffs on Indian exports in response to its continued trade with Russia.

While the EU imposed a ban on maritime Russian oil imports and refined oil products like diesel, a number of countries continue to import Russian fossil fuels and liquefied natural gas. Crude oil is also still being imported by Hungary and Slovakia, something that's causing a rift among EU members. I think President Trump, when he says that Europe needs to stop buying Russian oil and gas, is right. And the finger points in two places. One is Hungary and the other one is Slovakia. And of course, we make sure that President Trump is aware of who is feeding the Russian war machine. So far, the EU plans for its member states to completely phase out Russian oil by 2028. But Trump's ultimatum was not just sent to the EU. His letter includes Turkey, which is the third largest purchaser of Russian oil after China and India. The US president has already punished India, doubling tariffs to 50% on its exports to the United States.
