Typhoon Ragasa, the world's most powerful tropical cyclone this year, struck the southern Chinese city of Yangjiang on Wednesday after lashing Taiwan and Hong Kong with ferocious winds and heavy rains.

Super typhoon Ragasa, described by Chinese weather experts as the 'king of storms,' has brought severe weather to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and southern China. In Hong Kong, the storm caused widespread disruption, grounding hundreds of flights, closing schools and businesses, and resulting in injuries and property damage due to strong winds and flooding.

In Taiwan, heavy rain from the typhoon caused a barrier lake to burst, flooding a nearby town and leading to several deaths. Search and rescue teams have been deployed to assist affected areas. The typhoon has since moved towards southern China, where it continues to bring heavy rain and strong winds.

Here's a look at the Hong Kong coastline today as super typhoon Ragasa pummels the shore. It brought the financial hub to a standstill and forced the city's international airport to ground hundreds of flights. Ragasa is the world's most powerful tropical cyclone so far in 2025 and one of the strongest in years. Laura Westbrook joins us live now from Hong Kong with more on all of this. So Laura, starting where you are in Hong Kong, we're looking at some images of it right now. How has it been there? Well Hilary, Chinese weather experts have called this the king of storms and here in Hong Kong it did bring hurricane force winds. You might be able to see behind me some people taped up their windows to try and protect against those very strong winds. Now it brought the city to a standstill, hundreds of flights were cancelled, schools closed as well as some businesses and this storm brought with it very strong winds that brought down trees. It also caused flooding in some areas and storm surges as well. It has been and it has also some dozens of people were injured during the typhoon. Now it has been moving away from Hong Kong and so some of those conditions are starting to ease but forecasters have said that the heavy rain is expected to continue. And heavy rain in Taiwan caused a barrier lake to burst its banks and that caused water to surge into a nearby town, flooding it. There were videos that we saw of cars being submerged and homes being submerged by this muddy water and at least several people have also died. Now Taiwan has also sent search and rescue teams to the area to try and help with those rescue efforts. And Laura, I understand the super typhoon is hitting parts of southern China now, what's the latest there? That's right, it is now affecting southern China with heavy rain and strong winds and is expected to continue affecting those areas with heavy rain.
