After months of gridlock, U.S. President Donald Trump has finally secured a long-awaited ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas.

Former US President Donald Trump played a central role in brokering a truce between Israel and Hamas, following indirect negotiations held in Egypt. The breakthrough came after months of diplomatic efforts, including a key meeting with Arab leaders and intensified talks led by Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. 

The initial phase of Trump's 20-point peace plan has been accepted by both parties, with Hamas agreeing to the proposal with certain conditions. While the first stage of the agreement is now in place, negotiations continue on the more complex aspects of the peace process.

Trump's Gaza truce: How the Israel-Hamas deal was done

It was when Trump was unexpectedly handed this note that he realized his efforts to end the conflict in Gaza were about to come to fruition. It was a message from Secretary of State Marco Rubio telling him the indirect talks in Egypt between Hamas and Israel on his 20-point peace plan were on the brink of success. Observers say the build-up to the breakthrough in Egypt began back in August after the announcement of a quote big meeting by Trump to discuss a comprehensive plan for the day after the war had finished, suggesting a renewed focus on ending the conflict. Among those driving this were Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff seen here more recently with Israel's Netanyahu and on the right Jared Kushner his son-in-law and Mideast envoy during his first term. Urgency began to grow a few weeks later when Israel controversially carried out a missile strike to try to kill Hamas political leaders negotiating a deal with Witkoff in Qatar. Fearing an escalation across the region Trump expressed disapproval and Witkoff and Kushner stepped up talks with Qatar to defuse the crisis and try to come up with a plan. Momentum gathered again at the UN General Assembly in New York at the end of September. Not only was Netanyahu treated like a pariah as dozens left the venue in protest but Trump held a key meeting with Arab leaders on the sidelines where he reportedly listened to their concerns about the conflict such as Israel's apparent plans to annex the West Bank something Trump then assured them would never happen. They also apparently made clear to Trump what would be acceptable to the Palestinians in any future deal. Soon after when Witkoff and Kushner had spent time narrowing differences with Netanyahu Trump announced that the Israeli Prime Minister had agreed to his proposal to end the war in Gaza. As the offensive on the ground continued the key now would be Hamas's response to the Trump plan. This turned out to be a yes but with conditions. Some argue this could have been seen as a rejection but Trump decided to interpret it as acceptance. A week later phase one has been approved but the difficult details of phase two have yet to be worked out.
