The prospect of this tariff has already caused orange prices in Brazil to drop sharply, with farmers considering leaving crops unharvested due to economic pressures. 

The U.S. relies heavily on Brazilian orange juice, which makes up half of American consumption under major brands. The new tariff could make Brazilian exports unviable, potentially leading to oversupply in Brazil and shortages in the U.S. This situation may also affect major beverage companies like Coca-Cola and Pepsi, who dominate the American orange juice market.

Trump's 50% tariff threat sours Brazil's citrus belt

Brazil's citrus farmers are weighing drastic measures as steep U.S. tariffs loom on the horizon. That includes abandoning their crops to rot unharvested, as U.S. President Donald Trump plans to impose a 50 percent tariff on all Brazilian products starting August 1. Just the threat of the new tariff has sown chaos even before being enacted. This month, orange prices in Brazil dropped by almost half of what they were a year ago, according to the widely followed CP Index from the University of Sao Paulo. If Trump's tariffs do go into full effect, orange farmer Ederson Kogler says it would, quote, make the financial side of citrus unviable. We produce citrus fruits for both the table and industry. And once the industry is affected by these tariffs, it will certainly make the export of concentrated citrus juice unviable. And as a result, there will be greater supply within Brazil that will certainly not be able to absorb all the citrus production that occurs in the country. When you peel back the layers of the new trade policy, it's not just Brazilian farmers who would bear the brunt. U.S. consumers will also be squeezed. An astounding half of the orange juice Americans drink comes from Brazil under household brands such as Tropicana, Minute Maid and Simply Orange. Brazil, which produces 80 percent of the world's orange juice, will be hard to replace too. That's because the U.S. has become more dependent on orange juice imports in recent years due to the citrus greening, crop disease, hurricanes and spells of freezing temperatures. Kogler says it won't be easy to replace American consumers either. Once this happens, the industry will be unable to absorb or export this juice. It will have to try to find other markets. But these things don't happen overnight. The tariffs may also spell trouble for Coca-Cola and Pepsi, which account for some 60 percent of the orange juice sold in the United States, according to orange juice exporter lobby Citrus BR. Neither company replied to requests for comment.
