Wiles' interviews, described as a 'diary of chaos,' included candid assessments of the administration's early months, internal disagreements over pardons related to the January 6th insurrection, and criticism of the Justice Department. Despite the administration's positive messaging on the economy, recent polling indicates only 36% of Americans approve of President Trump's economic handling, highlighting significant public concern.

President Trump announced today he plans to give a primetime address tomorrow night to the nation. Meantime, Vice President J.D. Vance is in Pennsylvania today promoting the administration's economic agenda as the president faces mounting pressure over rising inflation and affordability. While there, the vice president acknowledged a series of interviews with White House Chief of Staff Suzy Wiles that were published today in Vanity Fair. He playfully touched on the fact that she referred to him as a, quote, conspiracy theorist. I haven't looked at the article. I, of course, have heard about it. But conspiracy theorist, sometimes I am a conspiracy theorist, but I only believe in the conspiracy theories that are true. Suzy is a person I've come to know very, very well. And, you know, a lot of you probably ask yourself, what is it like behind the scenes? What's going on, actually, behind the scenes of the Trump administration? And I'll tell you, the president is exactly in private who he is in public. CBS News Senior White House and political correspondent Ed O'Keefe joins us now. Ed, what were your other big takeaways from those interviews? Well, 11 over the past year for what they call at Vanity Fair a diary of chaos in these first months of this administration. Wiles shares her thoughts on a wide range of things, suggesting that the president has the personality of an alcoholic. While he's someone who doesn't drink, he's someone who believes that he has a great ability to do just about anything he wants to do. As you mentioned, suggests the vice president is a conspiracy theorist. As he said, well, we've talked about this, Wiles and I, and it's just that I believe in certain things like, for example, that the media covered up Joe Biden's inability to do the job or the the masking requirements that were in place during the pandemic. But as you saw there, defended her, as has most of not all of the cabinet in social media posts throughout the day today. She suggests that the attorney general, quote, completely whiffed on her understanding and explanation of the Epstein situation and what the Justice Department had in its possession as people who've been concerned about that were reaching out for more information and raises a lot of other questions about policy. For example, saying that she believed on day one that only those that had been convicted of nonviolent offenses regarding the January 6th, 2021 insurrection should have been pardoned, but that ultimately the president decided to pardon everyone who had been convicted. And she pointed out that she believed at least the first 90 days of the presidency should be focused on retribution. But after that, that should stop. And of course, that hasn't. So, you know, these are the kinds of comments that chief of staff often gives to an author or a reporter to save under embargo until after they leave the job or until after the presidency. They don't normally give them in real time. And that's what's interesting here. That's what's so remarkable about her decision to sit for these interviews. But so far, as of this hour, at least, she still has the support of the White House. All right. So let's turn to the economy, because the vice president was making those remarks in Pennsylvania. Did they fall in line with Americans financial concerns? No. If he says and if the president says that the economy is a plus plus plus, they're not reading the polling that suggests the American public is widely concerned about how the administration is overseeing the economy. I think it was 36 percent approval for the president's handling of the economy in the most recent CBS News poll. Other surveys have shown that his measure from voters is low and in similar numbers. So it's a sign they understand they've got to keep talking about this going into next year's midterm elections, that while certain aspects of the economy are in good shape, there are others that are struggling. And obviously the perception among voters is things aren't going well. All right. Ed O'Keefe, thanks so much.
