The Department of Defense was originally named in 1949 when the US military branches were unified. Trump has previously positioned himself as a peacemaker, despite this latest move.

During his tenure, Trump has often portrayed himself as the president to end all wars, calling himself the peacemaker-in-chief, and repeatedly claiming he deserved to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
