According to the book, Trump made multiple calls to Putin after leaving office, including one instance where an aide was reportedly asked to leave the room so Trump could speak privately with the Russian leader. The book, titled "War," also alleges that Trump secretly sent COVID-19 testing equipment to Putin during a time of shortages in the United States. 

A Trump aide is cited in the book as confirming these interactions, stating that Trump had communicated with Putin as many as seven times since leaving office. However, a Trump campaign official dismissed these claims and referred to them as unfounded. The practice of former presidents communicating with foreign leaders is not unusual but generally less common with adversaries of the United States without the involvement of the State Department.

Both the Trump campaign and the Kremlin have denied the allegations, characterizing them as fictitious. Woodward, who has a long-standing reputation for uncovering major political stories, including the Watergate scandal, has authored more than 20 books, with 14 being bestsellers.

The opus, titled War, cites an unnamed Trump aide who says the pair had spoken as many as seven times since Trump left office. The aide also recalls one instance early this year where they were ordered out of Trump's office in Mar-a-Lago so he could take a call with the Russian president. However, the book also quotes a Trump campaign official who cast doubt on the supposed contact. Former presidents often speak with foreign leaders, but it's highly unusual to talk to a leader of one of the United States' adversaries without first clearing it with the State Department. The book also alleges Trump sent Putin COVID-19 testing equipment for his personal use in 2020 when many nations were facing shortages. In a statement, the Trump campaign said these were made-up stories and called Woodward a demented and deranged man. The Kremlin, meanwhile, also denied the conversations between Trump and Putin. Woodward rose to fame after he and his colleague Karl Bernstein exposed the Watergate scandal bringing down Richard Nixon. He's written more than 20 books on American politics and current affairs, including 14 bestsellers.
