More than 20 people have been killed in flooding caused by torrential rain in Mexico. The central region of Veracruz is among the states that has been hit particularly hard.

Torrential rain in the mountains of eastern Mexico triggered sudden flash floods, overwhelming rivers and inundating large parts of cities such as Potsarica. The rapid surge of water left residents struggling to escape, with some swept away by powerful currents and others seeking safety on floating debris. The floodwaters receded quickly but left significant damage, including mud and debris covering streets and extensive flooding of homes and businesses.

Nearby towns, including Gutierrez Zamora, also experienced rivers bursting their banks, forcing residents to evacuate and salvage their belongings as water levels rose rapidly. The military has deployed thousands of troops to provide support and aid in the affected areas.

It took just a matter of minutes for the river to surge, overpowering some in its path. This man was swept away and struggled through the powerful currents, while this woman floated to safety on an overturned fridge. Intense rainfall in the mountains sent water rushing downstream, inundating more than a third of the city of Potsarica. The water receded almost as quickly as it arrived, leaving streets covered in mud and debris. No one was prepared for this. As you can see, the tables, chairs, everything was affected. The flood reached a height of one and a half meters. Everything was flooded, the dining room and the entire restaurant, the kitchen, the bathroom, the games room, the private area. Everything is in terrible condition. In the nearby town of Gutierrez Zamora, a swollen river also burst its banks. My son and I helped some friends remove their belongings from their house, and at that moment the water level began to rise rapidly, flooding a little over half a meter. It happened very quickly. Right now the water level is also rising fast. The military says thousands of troops have been deployed to provide support in affected areas.

A ceasefire is in effect between Hamas and Israel after just over two years of war. An exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinians held prisoner is set to take place in the coming days, and U.S President Donald Trump is set to visit the region on Monday.
