Israel says 48 hostages are still in Gaza, 20 of them believed to be alive. After two agonizing years, their families are waiting to learn if their relatives will truly return and in what condition. Former Israeli hostage, Ohad Ben-Ami, chants the Shabbat prayer in Tel Aviv Friday alongside the mother of Matan Zangokar, who has been held captive in Gaza since October 7th. In Hebrew, she says, these are tense days, hours, minutes, and seconds filled with anxiety. It is a feeling familiar to Ruby Hen. On one hand, excitement because we see the finish line, anticipation, but also anxiety. The New York native does not know if his son, American Israeli teenager Itay Hen, will return alive. The family had previously been told by the Israeli military that he was presumed dead, but Hamas has not given an update. We still have that glimmer of hope that maybe some miracle happened, but we are preparing ourselves for the alternative. The family of Yossi Sharabi hopes his body will be returned for burial. It's a guided optimism because it's the kind of optimism that's born out of heartbreaking experience. We hold our hope lightly because we've had our hopes dashed before. The hopeful and fearful anticipation gripping these families also held Jonathan Dekelhen before his son, Sagi, was released from captivity earlier this year. The families are asking themselves, who's coming home exactly? What are they going to be like? His son, he says, has just started to rehabilitate in his months of freedom. He can really only begin to live and breathe again and really enjoy life only after all of the hostages are back. And in exchange for the hostages, Israel released 250 Palestinian prisoners who are serving life sentences and 1,700 people who have been arrested since the October 7th terrorist attack. Certainly not the end of this journey, just the next step for so many. Ali, thank you very much.
