Despite public opinion polls indicating that over 70% of Italians support Palestinian statehood, the Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, maintains a strong alliance with Israel, citing strategic, ideological, and business reasons. The government has also highlighted its humanitarian efforts, such as providing medical treatment to Gazan children, but many protesters believe that public demonstrations are necessary to advocate for change.

The country has seen some of Europe's largest pro-Palestinian rallies in recent weeks, the marches led by students and trade unions, who say that supporting Palestinians reflects their belief in standing with the oppressed. It is our embrace of the people of Gaza, of the people of Palestine, but it is also a way of rediscovering our humanity when we have been told that only money matters, only your position in life matters. The liberation of the Palestinian people also guarantees hope for everyone else. If the doors are closed to Palestine, they are closed to the rest of the world. Organizers say their message is simple, they want the government to listen. Well, this river of people is making its way through the streets of Rome. There are many union flags here and many students, but the crowd is incredibly diverse. We've seen young people and old, parents with children, all out here trying to show their dissent. But the sentiment here is in stark contrast with the policy of Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni's right-wing government, a firm ally of Israel in the EU. And experts say that while more than 70% of Italians back Palestinian statehood according to polls, Meloni's government's focus lies elsewhere. Alignment with the US for the Italian government is of paramount importance. Of course, there are also other reasons, some ideological reasons, this government is close to Israel. There are also industrial and business reasons, the security, the national security of Italy is connected also with the security of Israel in terms of equipment and cyber security. The government notes that Italy has taken in nearly 200 Gazan children for medical treatment, more than any other European country, with Meloni arguing protests don't help Palestinians.
