First elected in 1993, she's held a range of key positions, including minister of economic security and of internal affairs. Now in the top spot, the economy may be her most immediate challenge. Successive prime ministers have struggled to revive Japan's fortunes. And a recent trade deal with the U.S. has seen tariffs imposed on key sectors, including the auto industry. Right now, I believe Japan's economy is in a very fragile state. We'll likely see more companies and related industries affected by Trump's tariffs. And various other challenges may arise as well, including sudden natural disasters. Takahichi comes from the conservative end of the party. She's considered a hawk on China. She's also a regular visitor to the Yasukuni Shrine, a controversial war memorial that Japan's neighbors consider a symbol of militarism. The fact that she has this more nationalist reputation is probably going to make her administration harder to deal with for some of Japan's neighbors. Her visits, for example, to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine, which is the war memorial in Japan where a number of war criminals are also interred. This is going to make relations with China, South Korea, other countries that are occupied by Japan more difficult. Many of Japan's prime ministers don't remain in power long.
