Ukraine and Russia have carried out another exchange of prisoners of war. About two hundred Ukrainian prisoners released by Russia have arrived in the Chernihiv region near Ukraine’s border with Belarus.

Everyone here has been waiting months or even years to find out the fate of their loved ones. An exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine gives them hope. They've come to see if their missing relatives are among those who will be released and brought to this hospital in Chernihiv region. Lyudmila Liskovits told us men from her son's unit say they last saw him, severely wounded, on the battlefield last year. He joined the army two years ago. I was telling him stay at home, don't go there, because I'm very afraid for you. And he was telling me, mum, I will come back, but I cannot abandon my comrade. And so he went. None of the people here know if their loved ones are among the prisoners who will be exchanged or not. Many of them are young men who joined the army, went to fight and were reported missing from the front lines. So the people have come here on the off chance that their husbands or sons will be among those who are coming home. The exchange goes ahead on Ukraine's border with Belarus and word spreads fast. It's good news for these two women. This one says, my dear little Roman, you will be at home. Nina Vyvinchenko has also been told her son's among them. This is the fourth year of his captivity. He was taken at the very beginning. Tomorrow is his birthday. I was praying, asking him, please come home on your birthday. Russia doesn't release any data on its captives. Ukrainian officials say they only find out who will be released as the exchanges are negotiated. Many families only find out when they get off the bus. This exchange of about 200 prisoners included several who were injured and 20 civilians. Large-scale prisoner exchanges are the only outcome of talks between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Istanbul earlier this year. Everyone arriving here looks thin. Rights groups say Russia is responsible for widespread abuses of prisoners of war, including torture. It denies mistreating prisoners. Every day in Russian captivity is very dangerous for their health and lives. So we are working hard and negotiations never stop and we hope that the next talk will be very soon. Most of the families waiting here are not in luck today, but they hope for news of those who are still missing.
