The United States Senate on Friday (October 3) failed to advance competing plans to extend federal funding and end the government shutdown, likely pushing the funding lapse into at least next week.

Senate leaders have not scheduled further negotiations, and lawmakers are expected to reconvene next week to attempt another vote. The political standoff has left the government closed, with neither side showing signs of compromise.

On Capitol Hill, senators have once again failed to pass a stopgap funding bill as we do mark day three of this federal government shutdown, which means the government will remain closed until at least the start of next week. This appears to be no sign right now of the standoff ending. Both sides of the aisle continue to blame one another for the shutdown. Democrats and Republicans are saying it should be a relatively easy issue to resolve. We're in the midst of a government shutdown that has been caused by Donald Trump and Republicans to inflict further pain on the American people. The government is shut down right now because Donald Trump and Republicans refuse to provide health care to working-class Americans. During the Biden administration, when the Democrats have the majority here in the United States Senate, the Democrats on 13 different occasions voted for this, a short-term continuing resolution. Now, I have to ask, what's changed? What's different about this? What's different is who's in the White House. That's what it is about. It's all about President Trump and the Democrats needing to pick a fight to satisfy their far-left political base, far-left activist organizations, who are the tail wagging the dog right now. And CBS News Congressional Correspondent Caitlin Huey Burns joins us now from Capitol Hill. So, Caitlin, what happens now? Where do things go from here, especially on negotiations now? Well, basically, Nancy, the House and the Senate are going to be out this weekend, most likely, and we won't have any sort of meeting until next week. They had this vote today. You basically saw a repeat of what we've seen all throughout the week. Senate taking the votes and the same amount of people voting for it and against it. You do have three Democrats or two Independents and one Democrat, one, sorry, excuse me, one Independent, two Democrats vote for this. So Republicans are really hoping to kind of peel away some Democrats, but they haven't been successful in that effort just yet. And, Nancy, I was watching very closely the Senate floor while this vote was taking place, and there weren't really many bipartisan huddles. There were a couple here and there, a couple of conversations. But you could also see that the two leaders of the two parties, Chuck Schumer of the Democrats and John Thune of the Republicans, they were standing really close to each other and they were not talking. They have not met today. There are no plans, as we know, to have any meetings over the weekend. So basically, you have two sides very much still dug in in their positions. Not a lot of movement going on here. So what we'll likely see is the Senate come back Monday, likely to hold the same vote again, hoping the Republicans, at least, are hoping that Democrats will come over. But there seems to be no sign of any further cracks in the Democratic coalition, at least not yet. We'll see whether the pressure builds over the weekend heading into next week. But for now, things remain as they are shut down. The shutdown continues. Caitlin Huey Burns, thank you very much.
