The mobilization is in response to ongoing protests near the Portland ICE facility, which have been focused on opposition to deportations. 

Portland's mayor and police chief have stated that they do not require federal assistance, asserting that local law enforcement has the situation contained. While some residents support the deployment, others question its necessity, suggesting it may escalate tensions. The protests have so far remained limited to a small area outside downtown Portland.

Today, tensions in Chicago over the Trump administration's immigration crackdown significantly escalated. Angry residents faced off against heavily armed federal agents. They held down some protesters and used tear gas against others. In a separate incident, one woman was shot and injured after what the Department of Homeland Security said war defensive shots. This as Governor J. B. Pritzker warned that President Trump is activating 300 National Guard troops against his wishes. Tensions are also high in Portland, Oregon. CBS is Adam Yamaguchi is there with guardsmen possibly deployed to the city as early as this weekend. Adam now federal agents and protesters are scoring off again as the city's mayor and police chiefs say they don't need the National Guard. They've got the city under control. We're a city in the forest that's as luscious can be. Portland Mayor Keith Wilson took us on a tour. This is really the home of innovation. That's always what Portland has been known for. And I know our reputation. We often talk about protests, but they're huge, peaceful protests. 200 members of the Oregon National Guard are being mobilized over the state's objections. Homeland Security says it's to protect the Portland ice facility, which is the increased protests over deportations. Yeah, there's nothing good that can come from bringing troops. It actually increases the temperature, which is the fear that we have. Portland police has jurisdiction. Chief Robert Day. Do you need federal help? No, we don't need the federal help. With the advent of social media, we're seeing the ability to take an event that might only be 15 or 20 people. But if you're filming that in a very condensed, small area and then you put out a 22nd clip, it looks like the city is on fire. It looks like chaos. While some welcome the possible presence of National Guard troops, it's probably a good idea because it looks like the mayor and the governor are not able to handle this to others. It's kind of a joke to me. Honestly, it feels silly. Like I heard the military was coming. I was like, for what? Yeah, I think it's trying to create a problem or make a problem when there isn't one to Mayor Wilson. It all comes down to Portland's progress versus perception. We own our reputation for the past, but our reputation going forward is one of caring. It's concerned. It's pride.
