In cities around Australia, they marched in their thousands. The message was united. Free the people of Palestine and end the violence in Gaza. Palestine will live forever! Shadowed by hundreds of police in Sydney, they marched through the centre of the city's business district. This rally was originally planned to reach the Sydney Opera House, but the State Supreme Court ruled that route unlawful, declaring the destination a safety risk. That decision, and strong winds, didn't deter the Palestinian Action Group. It's a nationwide march for Palestine, and despite this so-called ceasefire, we know that what Israel and America has planned for the Palestinians is only decades more of misery and ethnic cleansing and occupation and siege. So we need to keep fighting for freedom. Australia's Federal Government joined the United Kingdom and Canada in formally recognising the State of Palestine at last month's United Nations General Assembly. But protesters say symbolic gestures are not enough. The outrageous genocide which Australia is helping to perpetrate against the Palestinians. I don't, for a moment, believe that this supposed end of the war is an end of the war. I think the phrase, a pause in the genocide, might be more appropriate. There's been a surge in public support for Palestine in Australia over recent months. The turning point was in August, when more than 100,000 people braved wild weather to march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Now this march won't be the last, despite the ceasefire. Organisers of this protest say they'll now ramp up the pressure on Australia's Federal Government to impose sanctions on Israel.
