Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters have again gathered at Sydney's Hyde park calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Today marks six months since the October 7th Hamas attacks on Israel and the Israeli invasion of the Gaza strip that followed.

What you can see behind me and some of this vision has become familiar scenes at Sydney's Hyde Park as thousands of protesters, pro-Palestinian protesters, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza gathered almost every weekend, if not every weekend, doing a march, calling on the Australian government to take action. In the six months since the beginning of the hostilities, a thousand Israelis were killed, with dozens of hostages yet to be released. Meanwhile, more than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, mostly women and children. But also today is significant for the protesters here because it happens to be the 27th day of Ramadan, which is one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar. It's Laylat al-Qadr, the night of destiny, where many Muslims around the world believe all prayers are answered. So it's a significant day for both sides of this conflict. But Nabil, besides the ceasefire, what else are the protesters calling for today? Well, they want to see a stop to Israel's military invasion and campaign in Gaza, which they describe as a genocide. An accusation has been levelled against Israel at the International Court of Justice, one of course that Israel denies. They're also calling on the Australian government to stop backing Israel in different forms that that might take. So whether it's cutting ties, sanctions against Israel, or to stop the supply of Australian-made military parts that go into, for example, F-35 fighter jets that have been used in Israel's campaign against Gaza since the beginning of the war.

The funeral proceedings of the late football players Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva took place in the church of Gondomar in their hometown in the east of Porto. Family members, teammates and coaches joined thousands of mourners to pay their final respects.
