Their message is loud and clear. On Saturday, these people took it to the centre of Berlin, to a rally of 12,000, where prominent left-wing speakers spelt out what they think should be done. We are all here to speak out against the inhumane wars in this world, against all those who make money with murder and bombs, and against politicians and gun lobbyists who want to fool us with their lies and their double standards. When Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023, many in this country supported Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. But that level of support has eroded. Now one opinion poll suggests most Germans want their government to support sanctions against Israel, something Chancellor Friedrich Merz has refused. We're not talking about the attack on October the 7th. That was wrong, but just like in interpersonal relationships, you can't overreact. The Israeli military response is an unprecedented overreaction. Yeah, people who know international law call it genocide. For generations, successive German governments have supported Israel's right to exist and provided it with regular arms shipments. And although ministers imposed restrictions in August, for some at this rally, it's not enough. I'm here today because I believe it is my duty to be here. Those who aren't here should ask themselves why. I simply can't bear to see all these images, murders, war crimes, and I want to do everything in my power to stop this. There have been lots of demonstrations like this in recent times, but never with opinion in this country appearing to have shifted, broadly speaking, in favour of what these demonstrators want.
