More than 100,000 people marched through central London on Saturday in a 'Unite the Kingdom' demonstration against immigration organized by far-right activist Tommy Robinson. Police said a number of officers were assaulted.

A large anti-immigration protest took place in London, organized by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Laxley Lennon. Police estimated that around 110,000 people attended, though organizers claimed much higher numbers, which experts consider unlikely. Demonstrators carried signs with anti-immigration slogans, and speeches were delivered by Robinson and, via video link, billionaire Elon Musk, who called for a change of government in the UK.

A smaller counter-protest, titled the March Against Fascism, drew approximately 5,000 participants. The events prompted a significant police operation, with over 1,000 officers deployed. Authorities reported several arrests and incidents of violence, noting that the scale of the demonstration presented challenges for law enforcement.

Demonstrators showed up with signs saying send them home, stop the boats and unite the kingdom. There was also a stand up to racism counter-protest and that had a big police presence to come with it. Journalist Ollie Barrett has more from London. The bigger of two rallies in central London has been the Unite the Kingdom protest. Organizers say they think over 3 million people may have been on the streets of London. That is an unverified number. Experts say very unlikely as well. The initial police estimate was around 110,000 people but certainly it did appear that police were at times surprised by the numbers of people that were on the streets. That rally was organized by Tommy Robinson. That's not his real name which is Stephen Laxley Lennon and he has been saying that this rally is about patriotism, about border security, about free speech. But there were also protesters at the rally who had banners in tribute to Charlie Kirk who was murdered in the United States this week. There were speeches from Tommy Robinson who says that he believes mainstream politicians are now parroting his views. This despite the fact that critics say that he is a far-right activist. There was also a video link speech from Elon Musk, the billionaire who said that he believes there needs to be a change of government now in the UK and called for a dissolution of Parliament. There was also a counter-protest which was called the March Against Fascism. Much, much smaller numbers were there for that particular demonstration, more like 5,000 people or so. There have been well over 1,000 police officers on the streets of London for these rallies. The police say that they have made a number of arrests. They say that officers have been assaulted at times and say that there has been an outbreak or two of unacceptable violence, they say. Certainly, this was a day when a major policing operation was required. As I say, Tommy Robinson insisting three million people on the streets, police saying far fewer than that, but certainly numbers that made that policing operation very difficult indeed and tensions at times very high indeed as well.
