Tropical moisture is on the way to the Southwest, with unusual September rain expected in Southern California.

The remnants of former Tropical Storm Mario are bringing increased moisture to Southern California, resulting in showers and thunderstorms across the region. This system is expected to deliver rainfall amounts that are double the typical September averages for cities such as Los Angeles and San Diego, with half an inch to an inch of rain likely in the L.A. Basin and up to two inches in higher elevations. 

The moisture is moving northward, affecting areas from Orange County to Ventura County, and may cause challenging commuting conditions. Thunderstorm activity is also forecast to expand inland and could reach as far as Flagstaff and Las Vegas.

The ghost of Tropical Storm Mario is bringing rain to Southern California

Across the southwest, we're beginning to see a little more moisture come in. You can see some showers, thunderstorms south of L.A. and we're going to begin to see this ramp up. We can find the ghost of Mario, former Tropical Storm Mario is on the map and overall we use the spotlight tool to highlight the low-level swirl of low pressure. There it is. And again, that is the main agent driving some of this moisture up into parts of Southern California here around the circulation. So generally, that former tropical system is a big contributor to the moisture coming into Southern California. Now on a typical September, whole month of September, we only average around 0.1 to 0.15 inches of rain in September in San Diego and L.A. We'll probably pick up probably twice that, maybe a little more than that, just over the next two days in those cities from this system. So leftover tropical moisture from Mario coming into the southwest. It's a pretty big story here in L.A. It doesn't mean it's going to be raining the whole time on Thursday, but there will be some showers. We have the light green for some showers down into parts of Los Angeles and especially Orange County, San Diego County, and then some thunderstorms a little bit farther east where there will be a little more heat out there to drive the bus. But look at the moisture flinging on shore and moving north, charging northward up into areas around Ventura County, 8 a.m. Thursday. Some downpours will be out there. It's going to be a tough morning commute in L.A. and arguably in San Diego as well. And then through Friday, we'll have some more downpours kind of expanding more inland and perhaps decreasing in L.A. by then. But over the next two days, especially through Thursday, half an inch to an inch of rain likely in the L.A. Basin, one to two inches up into the high ground. And stepping ahead to Friday, thunderstorms increase into areas near Flagstaff, maybe even into areas around Las Vegas.
