During Donald Trump's state visit to the United Kingdom, large-scale protests took place in central London, with thousands of demonstrators gathering on Regent Street. Protesters displayed signs opposing Trump and his policies, with messages such as 'Stop Trump' and 'Stop racism,' and many carried Palestinian flags and called for an end to arms sales to Israel. 

The protest included union members, peace activists, and members of various organizations, some also voicing opposition to nuclear weapons in Britain. While Trump was in Windsor and did not witness the protests directly, demonstrators aimed to send a broader message about their concerns regarding his policies and the British government's decision to host him.

And we know the CBC's Chris Brown is at the site of a protest in London this hour, which is about 60 kilometres from Windsor. He joins us now live. A lot of people where you are right now. Tell us more about the scene that you're a part of, Chris. Well, it's very difficult to get an idea of numbers, but there's considerable, certainly in the thousands, and right now we're on Regent Street, one of the major thoroughfares in London's shopping district, totally shut and lots of signs. I'll just read a couple. Stop Trump. Stop racism. Trump not welcome. Also, a lot of Palestinian flags. End the genocide. Many groups are calling. A lot of kafiyas. Stop arming Israel. So you have about 50 members of what they're calling the Stop Trump Coalition who've come out. Union members, people who belong to charities, peace activists. There's also lots of people here calling for no nuclear weapons in Britain as well, at least not American ones. The overall message, people here feel Trump's policies are very toxic and they feel there's a lot of hypocritical behaviour, frankly, by the British government. For example, Donald Trump is someone who's a huge supporter of fossil fuels and yet he's having lunch today with King Charles, who spent most of his life as a climate crusader. So a lot of people don't think the trade-offs that Britain's making with this state visit are worth it. Notably, they are here in London, the protesters. Trump is out there in Windsor. So Trump is not seeing any of this, but obviously their feeling is that people beyond Britain, beyond London, will. And they're trying to at least make some political points to go along with the other statements, at least, the politics that Trump is going to be pushing while he's here.
