In the idyllic waters around Green Island in the Great Barrier Reef, scientists are on the lookout for turtles. But catching them is easier said than done. Understanding these vulnerable populations all the way from Moreton Bay to the Torres Strait is vital to ensure their survival. We've been measuring, we've been weighing, we've been finding what they've been feeding on but we're also looking at their DNA, their genetics. The Queensland Department of Environment and Science has funded the project, working alongside several universities to record turtles in their feeding grounds. This is where they do spend the majority of their time fattening up, getting ready, building energy and fat stores for the future. Sampling from feeding grounds also gives a better indication of the overall population than studies that focus on nesting sites. Having this hands on work in the water gives us indications or we can see flags that you can't usually see from just tagging turtles on a nesting beach. Those flags include concerns about the impact of climate change on turtle populations, from the impact of temperature on egg development to growing concerns for turtle food supplies. This gives us an early warning sign of what the future might be looking like. And that future might be bleak. There's a whole raft of things that have happened to them over the last couple of hundred years and now we've got this bowling ball of climate change impacts that we know are likely but we don't know exactly what it's going to look like. They hope with increased knowledge, changes can be made. So that we can develop policies and conservation strategies that are going to look after them for our grandchildren.
