According to the New York City Police Department, there have been 16 deaths and 20 severe injuries related to this activity over the past three years, with the average age of those involved being just 14 years old.

To combat the problem, the NYPD has deployed drones to monitor subway cars and respond to 911 calls reporting people on top of trains. These drone operations have led to the rescue of over 200 individuals since 2022. The department emphasizes that each arrest for subway surfing is considered a life saved and encourages parents to stay informed about their children's whereabouts and activities.

So this is the drone that the NYPD, the New York City Police Department, is using to fly up over these subway cars to make sure that nobody has climbed up and is riding on top. We look at the data. We look at the 911 calls. We see what's going on. Each week, each Monday, we come up with a deployment plan, and then we send our teams out there and we make sure we save lives. These drone operations have rescued over 200 people since 2022. And the department refers to each subway surfing arrest as, quote, a life saved.
